Memory says, "I did that.Ą¨
Pride replies, "I could not have done

Eventually, memory yields.

Paraphrase
People do many things in their life that they would not confess
to others, nor to themselves.
Explanation
A lot of what a person does in a lifetime is sinful. So even though
they know they have done it, they wouldn't admit it, and eventually
OMIT it or lie, for their own satisfaction. By doing that, the truth
(What's been done.) would soon be forgotten, since what remains
would be what they've emphasized they've done, or even nothing,
because they've chose to forget it.
Comment
I believe this is very true in modern society. People have come
to care too much about what others think for their own self-importance
and value. For example: I will do something knowing it's bad, or
eventually would know it's bad, and omit it later on when things
are over and clear, thinking that my pride would have not possibly
let me done a thing like that in the first place. So by feeding
myself propaganda (false information), I will change the truth of
what had really occurred, and then be convinced that I have not
done it through my own comfort. It's sad, but it's true. It's what
everyone does, is doing, and would do.
